Biography
With almost twenty years of legal experience and an Ivy League education, John is considered an expert in family law practice. A life-long New Yorker, John started his legal career trying child abuse and neglect cases during the height of the crack epidemic as a special assistant to the Corporation Counsel. After years in the trenches, John joined the elite Legal Counsel Unit at the New York City Administration for Children Services, where he represented the City of New York in class actions and civil rights actions in state and federal court related to child welfare issues.
Prior to joining The Edelsteins, Faegenburg & Brown, LLP, John advocated in the Brooklyn Family Court as an attorney for children, working at the Children’s Law Center appearing on numerous custody, visitation, guardianship, family offense, paternity and child protective proceedings. While at the Children’s Law Center, John participated in complex trials almost on a daily basis, honing his litigation skills in the process.
At The Edelsteins, Faegenburg & Brown, John has successfully concluded many matrimonial and family matters with an extraordinary success rate. For example, John has recently successfully litigated relocation requests, an emergency transfer of custody and various complex matrimonial matters. In one particularly successful matter, the client began the case having supervised visits prior to John’s involvement and, through John’s tireless efforts, the client was able to conclude the matter with joint legal and split physical custody. John has been particularly adept at stepping in and taking command after his client’s initial frustration in litigation. His unique hard-nose litigation approach, dogged determination and scholarly acumen have been the recipe for success and client satisfaction. As a result of John’s many accomplishments, he was made a partner shortly after joining the firm.
John also has extensive experience in real estate finance, gained while working for boutique law firms representing large institutional investors. This experience provides a familiarity and proficiency with even the most complex matrimonial equitable distribution matters.
